The forecourt of Ostrava Main Station
The study presents a new design for a transportation hub that connects the city with its main entrance area and redefines the relationship between architecture, transportation, and urban life.
It stems from a long-term effort to strike a balance between functionality, clarity, and the identity of a place used by thousands of passengers every day. The design emphasizes clarity, safety, and the quality of public space, as well as the seamless integration of all modes of transportation—pedestrian, bicycle, automobile, and public transit.
The urban and architectural concept is rooted in respect for the historic station building while striving to naturally connect it with new urban structures.
The result is a space with a clear logic of movement, where functions and orientation merge into a coherent whole. The station forecourt is thus transformed into an urban foyer that connects Ostrava with its transportation hub.
The architectural expression of the design combines functionality with visual lightness—a transparent roof with an elegant structure underscores the significance of the entire hub while ensuring the openness of the space. The new solution brings not only greater comfort for passengers but also the possibility of future development of the area in connection with the broader urban context.
The study was developed in close collaboration with experts in transportation, urban planning, and public space. The result is a concept that opens a dialogue about the future direction of Ostrava and how the city can cultivate its strategic transportation hubs.
The project reaffirms CASUA’s long-standing philosophy—to create architecture that connects aesthetics, function, and the human dimension of the city.
